Answer the following questions and problems and then submit your answers directly on this document to the Project 1 Assignments Folder. You will have to refer to plate tectonic figures in Chapter 2 (2.8 and 2.9), Chapter 3, and Chapter 10 (10.1 to 10.8) of your text. Make sure you check out the plate tectonic web sites in the course “Webliography”, other web sources, and the textbook website to help you answer these questions.
1. List and briefly describe at least three types of evidence that supported Alfred Wegener’s continental drift hypothesis. You may have to do some research on this
2. What was one of the main objections from scientists to Wegener’s continental drift hypothesis?
3. How did continental drift ”hypothesis” become the ”theory” of plate tectonics? Define the term tectonic, and then briefly explain the theory of plate tectonics. What was the necessary technology and evidence that led to proving this theory?
4. Using Chapter 3 (esp. 3.4) in your textbook, note the three small figures at the top of page 57 that portray three types of plate boundaries. What type of force (i.e. tension, compression, or shear) occurs at each type of plate boundary? Which of the three plate boundary types produced the San Andreas Fault and California’s earthquakes (use an “X” to show)? Give a geologic location as an example of each boundary type...
4. Which tectonic plate do you live on? In what direction and speed are you moving? . Which is the nearest plate boundary from you? What boundary type is it?
5. What are the three types of convergent plate boundaries? See 3.6 (pages 60-61).
6. Briefly explain how the following geologic features or activity are evidence that support the theory of plate tectonics. See 10.1 and 10.2 (pages 270-273)
7. Using 3.6 (pages 60-61)and 10.3 to 10.5 (pages 274-279) in your textbook, briefly define and describe each of the following subduction features. Give a geologic location example of each.
8. List and briefly describe the three forces that are the driving force for plate tectonic motion. See 3.8 (pages 64-65).
9. The ancient supercontinent of Pangaea existed about 300 million years ago (300 Ma). Check geologic sources for some consecutive map views of the breakup of Pangaea over the last 200 Ma. Using these maps, and Chapter 10 (10.11 and 10.12) describe how the following continental land masses and ocean basins have changed from 200 Ma to the present. Choose any three of the following:
10. Explain how the Pacific Ocean basin and the Pacific Ring of Fire relate to the theory of plate tectonics. How will the Pacific basin change over the next several millions of years into the future?
